Frequently Asked
Questions

The time it takes to learn how to swim depends on factors like age, comfort in the water, and how often you practice outside of lessons. Just like any skill, everyone progresses at their own pace. Your goals also play a key role—whether it’s learning water safety, moving confidently in the pool, or preparing for a swim team. The advantage of private lessons is that we can customize the experience to meet your unique needs and objectives.

Each lesson is 30 minutes, which we’ve found to be the ideal duration for effective learning. We’ve tested both shorter and longer sessions, and this time frame delivers the best results. For optimal progress, we offer lessons 2 or 4 times per week. Consistency and repetition are crucial for mastering swimming.

Yes, we heat our pool when necessary. Children learn best when they’re comfortable. We want your child to jump right in and get the most out of every lesson.

At Hillside, we prioritize pool cleanliness to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all swimmers. For non-potty-trained swimmers, we require the Happy Nappy or Happy Nappy Duo. Swimmers with special needs must also wear size-appropriate protection. Splash Jammers and Splash Jammer Duo are available for older swimmers. For more details, please refer to our Diaper Policy linked here.

Long hair must be tied back and kept out of the swimmer’s face. While wearing a swim cap is optional, you or your swimmer are welcome to wear one if preferred. Caps are available for purchase on-site or at local swim shops.

We prefer to start lessons without goggles to help children learn how to handle water on their face. It’s important for them to feel confident in the water, even if they don’t have goggles on, as most kids aren’t prepared if they accidentally fall in. For children who are particularly sensitive to water on their face, we may introduce goggles during part of the lesson. We also offer high-quality goggles for purchase, ensuring a good fit for your child.

Your child will learn to swim without flotation devices. While they can be helpful when you’re in the open water (lakes, rivers, and oceans), flotation devices create a false sense of security and hinder proper swimming skills. Water wings and life jackets disrupt the natural swimming process, as they keep kids upright in the water. When removed, they struggle to maintain balance, which often leads to anxiety and fear. We focus on building confidence and proper technique from the start.

No, we believe 30 minutes is the ideal lesson length. Our private lessons ensure each swimmer receives our full attention. Typically, we have three instructors in the water and we’ll make every effort to schedule siblings at the same time if possible.

Of course! We welcome parents to watch. We have a spacious lawn and patio area where you can relax and observe. There’s also a designated play area for any other children you bring along. If you need to leave, please return at least 5 minutes before the lesson ends so your child can share any special accomplishments. In some cases, the instructor may feel that your presence is distracting. If that happens, we may ask you to move to the side yard or to the front yard. If asked to step out of sight, our goal is to help your child adjust and work you back into the lesson area. This process varies for each child, and we appreciate your support in helping them succeed.

This depends on the specific circumstances, as we do not have a chair lift for pool access. We work with many children with special needs and are committed to providing the best experience for your child. Please discuss any special considerations with us when signing up for lessons. Our instructors are skilled at adjusting their teaching styles to meet your child’s unique needs.

We currently offer lessons at our home location and Fresno City College. Please note, we do not provide in-home lessons.

All you need is a swimsuit, a swim diaper (if applicable), and a towel! We provide all the equipment, toys, and everything else needed for an excellent lesson!

Yes, lessons will proceed unless there is lightning. In the event of lightning, we will reschedule.

With our one-on-one instruction, parents do not get in the water. This approach helps your child build a stronger bond with their instructor, fostering a more positive swim experience. Parents are welcome to watch from the viewing area. If a child is particularly hesitant, we often suggest being out of sight for the first few lessons to help them build confidence and establish rapport with their instructor.

Children between the ages of 0-3 often cry during the first few lessons, and this is completely normal. They’re adjusting to a new environment, gaining confidence in their instructor, and becoming familiar with the water. This is all part of the learning process, and we’re here to support them. Typically, when parents stay out of sight, the adjustment period is quicker.

If your child is hesitant or upset about a specific part of the lesson, avoid telling them they don’t have to do that task. Encourage them to speak with their instructor about it. If they’re struggling to communicate, we’d be happy for you to help them express their feelings at the start of the lesson. The more we work together as a team, the more successful your swimmer will be. We’re all committed to their success.

As an adult with no prior lessons, you can expect a comfortable, private setting where you won’t feel embarrassed or overwhelmed. Our instructors will work with you at your own pace, ensuring you progress steadily.
